Project to Reposition a copy of the Virgin Maria statue on the tympanum of the Oratory of sant’Onofrio.
The intent of the operation was to recreate the complete front view of the Oratory as it was originally, with the statue of an Angel on each side and the Virgin Mary statue in the middle. The original Virgin Mary statue, of which a copy was made, is found inside the Oratory in fragile condition after a disastrous fall. By making a resin copy in a different size than the original, the operation succeeded in recomposing the original facade without risking damage to the existing statue. The copy will be positioned on the central pedestal of the tympanum by attaching it using the stainless steel plate that is part of the copy's frame. For this reason, the statue can be considered a reversible operation as it can be taken down without altering the original structure in any way, were it ever to become necessary. Moreover, the statue will be secured by two steel cables affixed to the rear of it.
Brief summary of the preparation of the copy of the Statue of the Virgin situated inside the Oratory:
The copy of the statue was made using a mortar of epoxy resin and selected rock powders. In the first phase, a clay model containing a supporting frame was made of the real statue. Then the clay copy was used to create the negative in blocks of casting plaster or using brush-on silicone rubber. The cast was reinforced with a metal frame.
